A rotation, not a toy
Interest lasts longer when there is something slightly different to reach for. Three toys put away and brought out in turn beat one toy left on the floor.
Two shapes, two kinds of play
The octopus is for tug and noise, the drumstick is for carrying about. Between them you find out which sort of player your dog actually is.
Why a rotation works
Can't decide which one they'd like
Nobody can, including us — dogs are oddly specific about toys and there is no reliable way to predict whether yours wants something to shake or something to carry. Buying all three settles it for less than buying them one at a time and getting it wrong twice.
It also fixes the thing that kills most toys, which is familiarity. Keep two put away, swap them round every week or so, and a toy that came out of the cupboard is interesting again in a way the one that has been on the floor all month is not.
